Consort Healthcare

“Sound professional relationships have been developed since the partnership was conceived, with Consort now considered very much part of the multi-disciplinary team assembled to manage the efficiency and effectiveness of our organisation.”
Tom Steljes, Directorate Manager, University Hospital North Durham.

Consort healthcareAll but one of Balfour Beatty Capital’s healthcare projects are managed through Consort Healthcare.

Under a typical scheme Consort will be responsible for constructing the hospital, the subsequent lifecycle maintenance of the building, and typically supplying a range of non clinical services to the NHS, including routine maintenance, cleaning, catering and security.

Our team links design, operation and maintenance effectively to minimise disruption and ensure that a positive environment for staff and patients is maintained both during the delivery and the operation of the hospital building.

We are sensitive to the ever-increasing pace of change within the NHS. Effective delivery of clinical services is often dependent upon creating facilities that can accommodate change. Flexibility is a critical part of our design, planning, build and management processes.

In the planning and build process we make provision for a range of different options in response to changing patterns of healthcare delivery or fluctuations in capacity.

Consort Healthcare delivers projects primarily through the use of Balfour Beatty Group companies providing clients with benefits which include:

  • Continuity and efficiency throughout all phases of the project
  • Rapid achievement of financial close
  • Competitively priced bids
  • Long term commitment to the healthcare sector
  • Strength and depth of expertise across the supply chain

In healthcare schemes, concession revenues arise mainly from payments for availability subject to any performance deductions in respect of the services. Indeed, all of our operational hospitals have been completed to time and budget and availability and service levels have been good.

As part of our commitment to the hospitals in which we are involved, we actively promote initiatives that are beneficial to staff and patients. For example, at Durham we have created a sustainable 'Arts for Health' programme, held a Christmas card competition in the children’s ward and an exhibition of work by several local artists so that patients, staff and visitors could select two artists to create permanent murals at the hospital.

As part of our active management of concessions during 2005 we increased our shareholding in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to 73.9%.
