In addition to the UK, Balfour Beatty Capital is looking to develop into further key markets.

United States
In the US, a number of States have introduced or are introducing legislation to facilitate PFI style models for private sector investment in roads, hospitals, schools and other sectors. Although the investment model is expected to vary from state to state, of immediate interest is the sale of existing and new toll roads concessions in Texas and elsewhere. Balfour Beatty already has civil engineering, rail and construction management businesses in the US. Based in Atlanta, Balfour Beatty Capital Inc has been established to serve the PFI market.

Europe
In Europe, there is an existing market in PFI projects across a broad range of investment types particularly in Germany, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia. Balfour Beatty Capital is exploring opportunities to invest in these markets and has established an office in Munich, Germany, where Balfour Beatty has an existing rail business.

South-East Asia
In the Far East there is a growing interest in PFI. In Hong Kong there are a number of projects already identified which could be procured on a PFI basis and a number of accommodation schemes have recently been announced in Singapore. Balfour Beatty already participates in these markets in both civil engineering and building construction through its joint venture company Gammon. A new company has recently been formed, Gammon Capital, in joint venture with our existing partners.
