At Balfour Beatty Capital we believe that our long term success depends on the continued delivery of the highest-quality service in a sustainable manner. The foundation for our approach to sustainability has been from an environmental and a social perspective, to promote a long-lasting infrastructure that has minimal impact on the environment and provides a positive contribution to societal needs.
Our business strategy for sustainability has been developed to take account of the physical, natural, social and economic environments in which we work. The principles and commitments to sustainable development are outlined within our sustainability policy.
Sustainability is important in how we approach our business
We continue to look for opportunities to improve and share best practice within our own business, with our supply chain partners and through supporting the operations of the Asset and Concession Companies.
We encourage our project stakeholders to work in partnership with us to identify new sustainable ways of working. We look to promote a sustainable solution from pre-design to construction and throughout the operational and maintenance needs of the infrastructure we invest in. To achieve our vision we work closely with stakeholders to understand and deliver their sustainability objectives as well as our own.
Our aim
It is our aim to reduce the impact we have on the environment, to promote sustainable development within the built environment and encourage sustainable communities, bring about economic regeneration through working with local supply chains, and to work in partnership with our stakeholders. Our ultimate goal is to respond to the sustainability challenge through a positive and long term social, economic and environmental benefit that we can bring to interact with the communities that we support.
In aiming to continuously improve our performance we strive to develop new initiatives to promote sustainable development, as well as in the protection and enhancement of our environment and communities, which we support.
To achieve our sustainability strategy our key milestones are to:
- strengthen sustainability management and governance
- encourage a sustainable culture
- align core aspects of our offering with our partners sustainability agenda
- provide the best service and solution
- ensure resilience to the impacts of climate change
- communicate our position
- collaborate with suppliers to deliver sustainable solutions.
To achieve these milestones, our annual objectives and targets are set and monitored on a regular basis. Our progress and performance, including our wider achievements are reported within our annual corporate responsibility report ‘Our Communities’.
In addition, we operate our management systems to enhance the environment; protect the health and safety of our people and others; and improve the quality of our service. In doing so, we work towards meeting the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001:2004, BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and BS OHSAS 18001:2007.
